Institute for Security, Defence and Peace

The Institute for Security, Defence and Peace started working in the academic year 1975/76, in order to establish unique foundations for education and training of teachers in the subject general public defence. This laid the foundations of the first interdisciplinary higher education scientific-educational institution in our republic for military-defence and security sciences; also, in that period it had a huge symbolic meaning and was an act of inestimable historical, political, cultural and educational importance for our country and nation. In that period, NNSG aimed to prepare teachers for teaching the subject Defence and Protection in high schools. In addition, such personnel were needed by the commands and headquarters of the Territorial Defence and Civil Protection, the then socio-political communities, the organizations of associated labour and others. The education and improvement of this profile of staff, as well as the organization of the entire teaching and scientific activity in the field of ONO, was realized according to a single curriculum for the entire country at that time.

To effectively respond to all the modern challenges that have completely changed the social, political, economic, security and educational environment, the Institute in 1995 made significant structural changes and was renamed the Defence Institute. New multidisciplinary curricula and overall scientific potential have been put into profiling newcomers. Our staff fully responded to the requests of the independent R. Macedonia in the phase of its security independence and the conception of a modern efficient national security system compatible with the systems of NATO and EU member states.

After the 2001 conflict in the country and a number of other serious changes in the immediate security environment, the need arose for a new redesign of study programs and the definition of new modern and current curricula, which will be a solid basis for educating staff in the field of peace studies and for scientific research on conflicts and their management and management. Hence in 2002 the Institute of Defense was renamed the Institute of Defense and Peace Studies with defined and verified study programs at European and world level. According to the new concept of scientific-educational set-up. In the academic year 2009/2010, the Institute for Defense and Peace Studies launched a new study program for the first cycle of studies in the field of security, thus completing its complex activity in the three important scientific fields – security, defense and peace studies. The new transformation inevitably imposed the need to change the name of the Institute to the Institute of Security, Defense and Peace.

Following the social changes and the needs of the state in the academic year 2017/18, a new program was launched at the Institute – Private and corporate security, which is conceived according to European and world standards.

Today, the Institute of Security, Defence and Peace is taught by representatives of the younger generation of professors, most of whom are staff from the Institute. These are experts whose papers are recognizable beyond our borders; experts who made the Institute a recognizable and respected Institution internationally. These cadres together with their senior colleagues and professors built the foundations of the Macedonian military and security scientific thought, appropriate to the national, regional and world values, specifics and tendencies. In its work so far, the Institute has created the solid potential necessary to profile a competent expert community that successfully researches and resolves national security issues, as well as issues of peace and conflict resolution in theory and practice. It that respect, the Institute publishes the international scientific journal  “Security Dialogues” in which scientific and professional papers are published by domestic and foreign scientists and experts in the field of security, defence and peace.
