Dr. Zoran Matevski

Full professor

Born on November 16, 1957 in Skopje, where he completed primary and secondary education. He graduated from the Institute of Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University “St. Cyril and Methodius ”in Skopje. Immediately after graduation he was admitted as a junior assistant at the Institute of Sociology. He defended his master’s thesis entitled “Social reasons for emigration from the Republic of Macedonia to overseas countries” in 1994, which earned him the academic degree of Master of Sociological Sciences. In the same year he was elected an assistant at the Institute of Sociology. He defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “The Impact of the Mass Media on Sociological Cognition among Secondary School Students in the Republic of Macedonia” in 1998, earning him the degree of Doctor of Sociological Sciences. In the same year he was elected assistant professor in the teaching-scientific title. In 2003 he was elected associate professor at the Institute of Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje. In 2008 he was elected full professor. He held the position of Head of the Institute of Sociology from 2009 to 2017. He also served as the head of the Council for Doctoral Studies in Sociology, the head of the Council for Postgraduate Studies in Sociology, the head of the Council for Postgraduate Studies in European Studies for Integration. He is currently the head of the Center for Intercultural Studies and Research, and the head of the Teaching Commission of the Faculty of Philosophy. In 2008 he was elected full professor. He held the position of Head of the Institute of Sociology from 2009 to 2017. He also served as the head of the Council for Doctoral Studies in Sociology, the head of the Council for Postgraduate Studies in Sociology, the head of the Council for Postgraduate Studies in European Studies for Integration. He is currently the head of the Center for Intercultural Studies and Research, and the head of the Teaching Commission of the Faculty of Philosophy. In 2008 he was elected full professor. He held the position of Head of the Institute of Sociology from 2009 to 2017. He also held the positions of Head of the Council for Doctoral Studies in Sociology, Head of the Council for Postgraduate Studies in Sociology, Head of the Council for Postgraduate Studies in European Studies for Integration. He is currently the head of the Center for Intercultural Studies and Research, and the head of the Teaching Commission of the Faculty of Philosophy.

He was a visiting professor at the Faculty of Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, where he taught Religion in R. Macedonia and the Western Balkans region. He has been on study visits to Croatia, Poland and Latvia, where he has given a series of lectures on the religious situation in Macedonia and the Balkans. In 2019, it organizes the First European Conference for Religious dialogue (to be held every second year), as President of the International Programming Board. He founded the international magazine “Religious Dialogue and Cooperation”, where he is the editor-in-chief. He is currently a member of several important international scientific institutions: International Institute of Sociology (IIS); International Sociological Association (ISA); Society for the Sociology of Religion (ISSR);

He has participated in a number of scientific research projects, and currently participates in: (2019–2023) Project to develop and implement a national strategy for the development of the concept of One Society for all and Interculturalism and (2018-2021) RETOPEA, Religious Tolerance and Peace.

He speaks English. He was president of the Association of Sociologists of the Republic of Macedonia in the period from 1998 to 2002.

Research interests: sociology of religion, the role of religion in peace and conflict, religious dialogue and cooperation, religious fundamentalism and Islamophobia, conflict resolution.
